I mod and or recable most Grado cans! (some are Vixen only). I am the original modder who led the way for all aftermarket woodies and recables. Grado being the second headphone I "woodied", and the first recabled. You can see the original in Archive Pics, along with some other sweet Grado's.
Anyway, as far as sound goes, the cable, exclusive tweaks, my experience and the enclosure size is where the improvement is realized, wood also plays a role to some extent.
I will modify (shorten) your forks (as seen in pics) so the woodies will fit my thicker wood walled enclosures. This helps their overall strength. The extended part that I modify has no purpose other than blocking the beauty of the wood. Deeper cups are better IMO, as long as they're not too deep. Button removal at your request. Woody end tips may not pass by the larger new version 325i band, thus you only have about half adjustment length of rods.
A standard woody mod would be like the pic third down on the right (shows 2 together) and a couple on HF-1 page. Wide tops are typically headphone deals page items, or direct customs. If you want to spend some serious dough and max them out, then give me a shout and we can explore it (including wide tops).
GS-1000 recabling is kind of a pain, but they sure look and sound cool when I do them. I must remove the drivers and enlarge the stock entry hole to recable these. I personally think they sound best with bowl pads...
Locking Adjusting Rods… Adjust these tight (in the vein of the old HP1000's) to lock the rods from moving up and down and that seemingly never ending Grado cable tangling and annoying swiveling. Can be finger adjusted very easily while wearing them. Available with recable or woody/recable only though…
